Our first Doggie Party was a great success and our next event will include dogs  (The publicity in the Salem Evening News and Channel 5’s online version generated great interest in the event)!   Attendees were very happy to receive a Halloween- themed bandana and a bag of doggie treats for their four-legged friends.  We discussed dog issues in Ward 2 and got several great suggestions.  Here are just a few:

Dog Licenses and Dog Passes
Why are they distributed in two different places  – you have to go to City Hall to get the license and then to Park and Rec on 5 Broad Street to get the dog pass.  Why can’t they be obtained in the same place?  I suggest we take it one step further and let owners apply on line and receive it all by mail.

Water Fountains (Bubblers) Around Salem
The city is moving towards bring back water fountains,  something I have championed since my days working for MWRA because it reduces the use of plastic bottles.  Why not have a dog bowl attached to these fountains?  I have passed on this concept to City Hall and heard that they were thinking the same way!  Here is an example of what I mean.

Dog Park
No one is monitoring the dog park and as a result, it’s not friendly to all types of dogs, owners have concerns that the dogs that are in the park are not up to date on shots, etc.   This is a major issue that needs further discussion and meetings.

Doggie Committee
We decided that if I am elected on November 7, I will be create a “doggie committee” to address these and other issues.  If you have any interest in serving on this committee, please contact me at voteusovicz@gmail.com.   As always, I want to hear what you have to say regarding dog concerns in the ward.

PS – I  also donated bandanas to It’s Raining Pets at 3  Bridge Street – if you were unable to attend the event, please stop by and get a bandana from Brenda Murtaugh, the owner and wonderful pet groomer in Ward 2!!!!!
